The biology of birthdays... because every year counts!🎉

THIS NEWSLETTER IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY:
Inside Health Weekly
Few moments are as awkward as standing still while everyone sings “Happy Birthday” …
From forcing a smile and wondering where to look, to having no clue what to do with your hands, it’s a universal moment of pure chaos.
But behind the cake and candles, there is something deeper: a quiet checkpoint measuring how well our bodies are keeping up with time.
This week with Inside Health, let’s unwrap the science of longevity and explore how to make sure that every year you’re not just getting hotter, but healthier, too.

Cell-ebrating Your Energy:
Ever wonder how someone may be 60 years old, but feel fresh at the age of 20?
This feeling all lies in the power of our mitochondria– yes, the infamous powerhouse of the cell (how many times have you heard that now?)
But real talk. It’s time you give your mitochondria way more credit for being the reason you can study for hours on end, pursue your hobbies, stay lively, and overall just feel good.
As we age, so do our mitochondria. In fact, they are what distinguish the difference between chronological age and biological age.
Chronological age→ Literally, how long you’ve been on Earth
Biological age→ How old your cells are. Based on genetic & environmental factors, as well as diet & lifestyle habits
The Power Behind Your Candles:
Our mitochondrial function makes a HUGE impact on our biological age. In fact, their dysfunction is the root cause of many hallmarks of aging, including:
Chronic inflammation
Poor immunity
Cancer
Diabetes
Neurodegenerative disease
If you feel constantly tired, have persistent bowel problems, muscle issues, or brain fog, there’s a chance your mitochondria might be dysfunctioning!
Knowing your biological age is a great way to assess the health of your mitochondria. The quality & vitality of your mitochondria take the cake over how many candles you have on your birthday. It’s time you treat your mitochondria as though it's their birthday every day.

Here’s a fun resource that provides a good understanding of your biological age! What's my Biological Age?

By the Numbers…
Try those new things with your friends! Fuel your interests! Those who are happier are 22% less likely to get heart disease.
Choose sleep over cramming. This study found that people who sleep less than 6 hours are 1.7 times more likely to die prematurely than those who sleep 7-8 hours a night.
